Merritt started training in martial arts when he was 6 years old. He holds a 3rd degree black belt under Troy Hayes from Madisonville, KY. Merritt is well discplined in the areas of American karate, kickboxing, Muai Thai, boxing, traditional jiu-jitsu, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and Greco Roman wrestling.

Merritt is an explosive fighter that uses his diverse training to confuse his opponents. His competitive career started at 12 years old. Listed below are some of his accomplishments.

Currently Merritt trains out of VIP MMA camp located in Pleasanton, CA. Merritt is currently under the instruction of Anthony Morales (VIP MMA), Steve DelFierro (VIP MMA), and Dave Camarillo (Guerilla Jiu-Jitsu). Also, Merritt rounds out his fight team with a long time friend and training partner Tate Littlepage.

Merritt also utilizes a ground coach out of Henderson, KY. Darron Morse and Merritt have been working together for numerous fights in the past and Darron also worked with Merritt for six weeks on fundamental jiu-jitsu skills for Merritt's Strikeforce Challenger's debut.

Merritt utilized the above coaches to help him prepare for his Strikeforce Challengers debut in November 2009. Merritt had in his corner that night Littlepage and the VIP MMA Coaches Morales and Del Fierro. The night resulted in a win for Merrit and the VIP MMA team. Merritt extends an extra thank you to VIP MMA for their assistance and support.

Merrit has made guest appearances on the Fight School Tv as guest coach for seasons 1 and 2.

Merritt continues to train in his hometown of Madisonville, KY. Recently Merritt has began running his own private MMA training facility in his hometown. Presently, he has approximately 10 fighters that have begun to compete on the amateur MMA level. You can read more about them in the UPDATES section. Merritt has blended the various styles of martial arts he has studied along with a conditioning program that he developed through years of competition. Merritt also utilizes the various instructors from the past and present to continue to evolve the sport of MMA.

Currently Merritt is training for his next fight whenever, wherever, and whoever that may be.
